June Claire Ramage Rogers died peacefully on October 9, 2019 in Madison Indiana at the age of 91.
June was born on June 5, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to David and Clara Margaret (White) Ramage. Upon graduation from the University of Cincinnati in 1950 with a degree in English Literature she married The Reverend William (Bill) Warr Rogers, and together they attended McCormick Seminary in Chicago. They partnered in ministry in Kalamazoo MI, Athens GA, Ithaca NY, Huntington NY, Bangkok, Thailand, and Salvador, Brazil. June founded the Child Care Development Association in Ithaca NY in 1967 and was the Director of the Child Advocacy Office of the National Council of Churches. She graduated from Union Seminary in 1987 with a Master of Arts in Education and Theological Studies and completed her coursework for her Doctor of Ministry at San Francisco Theological Seminary. She was the pastor North Vernon Presbyterian Church and led Presbyterian Women’s mission trips to Cuba, Ghana and Brazil.
June’s boundless enthusiasm for life, dedication and passion for equality and social justice were recognized throughout her life by many organizations, including the Ithaca Journal Woman of the Year award in 1972, and the creation of the June Rogers Early Childhood Award in Tompkins County by the Child Development Council. She edited the books, “When Churches Mind the Children” for the Child Advocacy office and “God Gave the Increase” for the Year of Education of the Presbyterian Church.
June is survived by her children and their spouses John (Kathryn Lobato) of Garberville CA, Margee (Rick Samuel) of Norwalk CT, Carol (Rex Stewart) of Youngstown NY, David (Elisabeth) of Plymouth MN and Mark (Cynthia) of Hanover IN; her grandchildren Devlin, Sara, David, Elizagrace, Robert, Kelsey, Bryce, Hannah, James Speed, and Luke; her great grandchildren Kailani, Abby, Elian, Xavier, Brea, and Benjamin; her beloved nieces and nephews and her chosen families in many places. She is preceded in death by her husband, and her brothers David and Daniel John Ramage and her sisters-in-law Barbara and Mary Ann Rogers, and Wanda (Daniel) Ramage.
A memorial service is scheduled for December 28, 2019, at 1:30 pm at Hanover Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. The Reverend Katrina Pekich-Bundy will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate June’s life.
