Obituary

Life story Benjamin L. "Bennie" Goins, age 85, of Madison, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at the King's Daughters' Hospital. Born November 5, 1930 in Madison, he was the son of Everett and Louise (Helt) Goins. Mr. Goins attended Madison High School and was a lifelong resident of Madison. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from August 9, 1951 to July 2, 1953, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was then placed in the U.S. Army Reserves until October 8, 1959. He retired in 1993 from The Kroger Company in Madison as stock manager after forty-three years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 1969, and United Food and Commercial Workers. He was an avid bowler, having been in bowling leagues for fifty years. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and was a passionate Indiana University basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Jo Monroe, to whom he was married on February 21, 1954 at First Baptist Church, Madison; one son, Gregg Goins of Madison; six sisters: Helen Smith, Audrey Andrews, Mary Duncan and her husband, Jim, Margaret Carlow and her husband, Paul, Karen Thomas, and Sherrill Holt and her husband, Jim, all of Madison; three brothers: Richard Goins and his wife, Marianne of Saint Marys, Georgia, Charles Goins and John Goins and his wife, Wanda, all of Madison; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Sherry Monroe of Madison; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one great great nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1977, his father in 1992, one sister, Mabel Guthrie in 2006, two brothers: Danny Goins in 1986 and William "Pinhead" Goins in 2013, and his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Norine Monroe. The Reverend Brian Teater will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Lytle Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, with interment to follow in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Friends and family may call at Lytle Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, March 30, 2016 and from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion and a detachment from the U.S. Army will offer a final salute at the cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
