Obituary

Life story Mrs. Betty Dobyns, age 88, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover, Indiana. Born September 4, 1917 in Pontiac, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Harry R. and Ethel Colpus Shield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Dobyns in 1968, and her daughter, Sue Jackson. As a young woman, Mrs. Dobyns was blessed with the gift of dance. She danced in many theater productions in the Michigan area and traveled to New York City for lessons in ballet. Her husband, Bill, had a big band of his own when they were married. They had two children and taught dance in a studio in their home. In 1962 on their way to Lexington, Kentucky, they stopped at the lookout going down Michigan Hill and decided they needed to go no further as they had found their home. Following her husband's death, she became the head of housekeeping at Hanover College where she worked until retirement in 1977. She moved to Buffalo, New York for 18 years before returning to Madison in 1998. She enjoyed music, houseplants, hats and knitting, and in her later years, shopping with her son at Wal-Mart and a Dollar Store bargain. This wonderful woman will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Survivors include her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, Hank, Chris, and Joe Dobyns, of Madison; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Dobyns of Louisville, Kentucky; and her grandson and his daughter, Zach and Zoe Jackson of Lexington, Kentucky. Graveside services will be conducted by Mr. Randy Reed at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 18, 2006 at Springdale Cemetery.
