Obituary

Life story Betty Y. Rivers, age 84, of Madison, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the King's Daughters' Hospital. Born June 4, 1931 in Beattyville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Samuel and Ethel (Caudill)Taylor. Mrs. Rivers received her bachelor's degree in 1952 from the Indiana University School of Nursing, and received her master's degree in nursing administration in 1972 from Spaulding University. She had lived in Madison since 1957 and retired as the Director of Nursing for the Madison State Hospital in after thirty-six years of service. Her professional memberships included the American Nurses Association, through which she received her certification in nursing, and the IU Nurses Association. She was also a member of Kappa Gamma Pi, the Honorary Scholastic Society. Friends of the Library, and served as an elder and trustee of First Christian Church, Madison. Mrs. Rivers enjoyed traveling, grandchildren, serving her church, and reading several hundred books each year. Survivors include one daughter, Maria A. Rivers of Evansville, Indiana; one son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Emily Rivers of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Anna Boyd Comfort of Allentown, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren: Alec D. Rivers and Corinne L. Rivers; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1987; her mother in 1937; her step-mother who raised her, Roberta Taylor in 2002; her husband, Jack L. Rivers, to whom she was married on February 14, 1953 in Sweeney Chapel of Butler University, and who passed away on July 28, 1994; and one brother, Dr. Sam Douglas Taylor in 1997. Friends and family may call at Lytle Funeral Homes, Vail Chapel, from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday, January 5, 2016. The funeral is private for the family. Interment will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens. The family requests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, The Jewell House or the Alzheimer's Association. Contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.
