Obituary

Beverly Sue Kuntz, 68, daughter of the late LeRoy Allen Humphrey Sr. and LeRita Frances (Frazier) Humphrey, was born on December 15, 1956, in Madison, Indiana. She graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1974. She went on to pursue a two-year phlebotomy degree in Louisville, Kentucky, to become a laboratory scientist. While furthering her education, she was raising two children, Jacob and Christan, and working full-time at a little grocery store on Kuntz Road in Madison. Once she completed her education, she became a Laboratory Scientist in Fort Riley, Kansas.

After a few years, Susie and her children returned to the loving home of her parents on Chicken Run Road in Madison. On May 15, 1997, Vern Pyles, the former Laboratory Director for King's Daughters' Hospital, offered Susie an opportunity to work in the lab at the hospital's hilltop clinic. It was there that she met Jill Scranton, whom she mentored and became the best of friends with. They continued to talk daily, even after Susie's retirement. She also mentored Michelle Hill, always encouraging her to focus on her career and keep advancing until she was named the new laboratory director at King's Daughters' Hospital. Ms. Hill celebrated Susie's retirement on June 4, 2021. Susie valued recognizing others' talents and encouraging them to use their gifts, always guiding them toward reaching their full potential.

During their adolescence, her children enjoyed thoughtfully planned birthday parties with beautiful decor, cakes, and as many friends as they wished to invite. At the corner of Chicken Run Road, Susie was known for hosting Madison's most incredible teen Halloween parties with Rocky and J.R. Harrell at the DJ stand. Even though she worked quite a bit, she would take the kids to hotels across the state for weekends, along with her special tote bag filled with knick-knacks. On Sundays, Susie would help dress her kids for Christ when they accompanied their grandparents to Pastor DeBoard's service at North Madison Baptist Church. As her parents began to age she took meticulous care of them, heading to their house after her work day and staying all night.

After twenty-four years in the laboratory, Susie retired in 2021, which allowed her to spend more time with her family. She was very supportive of her daughter, Christan, keeping her connection to Christ and focused on her passions. She played a part in getting her granddaughter Kaitlyn to Case Western Reserve University. From the age of three, Susie helped nurture Kaitlyn's love of medicine by often bringing her into the lab at the clinic. She also enjoyed attending many of her granddaughter Emily's gymnastics meets through the years. Susie was incredibly proud of Emily for becoming a gymnast at the University of Bridgeport. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading her Bible and decorating and tending to her beautiful home filled with 200-year-old antique furniture.

After suffering from a back injury several years ago, her mobility became very limited. It took persuading to get her to have surgery, but Dr. Reinsel brought much peace to her body. This allowed her to fully enjoy her remaining years with her family and even assist her ailing son during the past year. Ms. Kuntz passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Even in her final days, she was able to give life through donation of her liver, kidneys, and pancreas.

Her soul will be cherished by her loving daughter: Christan Noel Kuntz of Madison; her granddaughters: Kaitlyn Ryan Turner, Emily Noel Turner, Justice Kuntz, Lyric Kuntz, and Mollie Green; her brother, LeRoy "Allen" Humphrey Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana; three step-daughters whom she held in great affection: Teresa Stewart of Madison, Kellie Kammes of Chicago, Illinois, and Michelle Bear of Madison; as well as their husbands whom Sue greatly appreciated their deep devotion to their wives: Tommy Stewart, Lance Kammes, and Nate Bear; and many nieces and nephews. Her loving son, Jarrod Michael Kuntz passed away on the following day, Tuesday, February 18, 2025. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jacob Ryan Kuntz who passed on June 2, 2002; her perfect sister, Carol Ann Grimes who passed on June 28, 2004; and her sister-in-law, Beverly Diane Hamilton Humphrey who passed on January 18, 2020.
