Obituary

Life story Mr. Carl M. Woodfill, age 81, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. He was born on October 11, 1926 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the son of Manly and Florence Ryker Woodfill. Mr. Woodfill was a retired farmer and carpenter, having worked for Leatha Young Contracting Company for 25 years before moving to and retiring from the Teton Corporation in 1987. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre. His memberships included a life membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 631, Order of the Eastern Star, Union Lodge # 2, Free and Accepted Masons, Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, a charter member of the Ryker's Ridge Water Company, and a thirty-five year member of Ryker's Ridge Volunteer Fire Company. He formerly attended First Christian Church of Hanover before moving to the Ryker's Ridge Baptist Church. In 1976, he was named Carpenter of the Year and in 1985 he received the Caleb B. Smith Medal of Honor, both in recognition of his work on the restoration of the Schofield House in Madison, which was the first meeting place of the Indiana Masonic Lodge. In 1987, he received the Indiana Volunteer Fire Association's Mid-West Award for Dedication to Fire Service, and Ryker's Ridge Fire Company's Fireman of the Year award in 1991. Mr. Woodfill was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known for his chili, which earned him the nickname "Klondike Carl." Survivors include his wife, the former Mary America Ashby, to whom he was married on March 1, 1947; three daughters and sons-in-law: Mary M. and Ralph Dean of Madison, Judy E. and Ned Bellamy of Deputy, and Cindy Lou and Phil Cole of Madison; four sons and daughters-in-law: Michael A. and Deb Woodfill, Carl D. and Jan Woodfill, Dennis and Crystal Woodfill, and Nathan and Michelle Smith, all of Madison; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Carol Woodfill of Madison; fifteen grandchildren: Kristopher Woodfill, Kammie Martinez, Kyle Woodfill, Karrie Weaver, Kathy Woodfill, Matthew Woodfill, Kelly Russell, Wesley Edwards, Venus Perry, Tammy McCutchen, Sonya Dean, Ralph Dean, Jr., Tara Hofer, and Joe Smith; two step-grandchildren: Shannon Konkle and Michael Cole; seventeen great grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; and a very close cousin, Mary Alice Simmons and her husband, Jim of Vevay, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert G. Woodfill. The Reverend Jason Thompson will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the Lytle Fuenral Chapel, with interment to follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, will conduct graveside services. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, where Union Lodge #2, F. and A.M. will conduct memorial services at 6:00 PM and the Ryker's Ridge Volunteer Fire Department will conduct memorial services at 7:00 PM. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Ryker's Ridge Baptist Church. Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home.
