Obituary

Life story Mr. Cecil Bruce, Sr., age 84, of Hanover, formerly of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at his residence. He was born on August 26, 1924 in Saluda, Indiana, the son of Getty and Mary Nighbert Bruce. Mr. Bruce was a 1942 graduate of the former Saluda High School, a class of eight members. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served from July, 1943 to March, 1944. He returned to Jefferson County and was a farmer for most of his life. He also owned and operated the Red 73 Dairy in Madison for a number of years. In his earlier years, he attended the New Bethel United Methodist Church. He was a current member of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, loved to play Bingo, cards, gamble, horse racing, and being with his family and friends. Also, earlier in his life, he enjoyed following his brothers around the country with their horses as they raced in different locations. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Cecil, Jr. and his wife, PJ of Hanover, and Robert and his wife, JoAnna of Indianapolis; two daughters: Kathleen Bruce of Hanover and Elizabeth Moore and her companion, Tim Rector of Madison; one brother, Dennis Bruce of Cincinnati; three sisters: Margaret Kimberlin of Lexington, Indiana; Ruby Williams and her husband, Chasteen of Madison, and Carolyn Barnes of Dillsboro, Indiana; one sister-in-law, Geneva Bruce of Seymour, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Dorothy Bruce on July 1, 1998; one daughter, Janice Bruce Day in 1965; one granddaughter, Jill Bruce in January, 2008, one great granddaughter, Hope Bruce in 1998, one sister, Pauline Easton and one brother, Lee Bruce. Chaplain Ben McRoberts will conduct funeral services at 2:00PM Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, with interment to follow in New Bethel Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 5:30 to 8:00 PM Friday, and after 12:00 Noon on Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cecil Bruce, Sr. Memorial Fund, in care of the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
