Life story Mr. Charles C. O'Banion, age 91, our beloved uncle, was call to his final resting place by the Lord on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at his residence. He was born on July 26, 1917 in Madison to the late Louis and Margaret O'Banion. Charles graduated from Broadway High School, attended Wilberforce University and graduated from Meharry Dental College with a degree in dental technology. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and during World War II he became a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen as a crew chief. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1945 with an honorable record. Charles returned to Madison and opened and operated his own dental lab for forty years. During that same time, he worked for the Madison Bank and Trust Company for thirty-four years before he retired. Charles lived a very good life and during his lifetime he was on the board of the Salvation Army, and a member of the Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award, the highest honor given to its members. He was also a charter member of the Madison NAACP. He received a proclamation from the State of Indiana General Assembly for being an outstanding Hoosier. The former governor of Indiana, Frank O'Bannon, awarded him a proclamation for "Sagamore of the Wabash" and the governor of Kentucky commissioned him a Kentucky Colonel. He has been a member of Broadway Baptist Church for many years and has been awarded in the past few years with several proclamations in honor of Charles O'Bannon Day , the 4th Sunday of every July. In the year 2007, he was so honored by the Mayor to have the street that he lived on, West 5th Street, to be named Charles O'Banion Way. Charles was preceded in death by his mother and father, three sisters and two brothers. He leaves to cherish his memories two nieces: Luella M."Sis" Lott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Hariett Kelly, and her husband, Harmon, of Texas; two nephews: Bruce O'Banion of Gary, Indiana and Attorney Charles O'Banion of Washington, D.C.; seventeen great nieces and nephews; fifteen great great nieces and nephews; and ten great great great nieces and nephews. Reverend Robert Scott, Reverend Robert Bass and Reverend Bruce Rose will conduct funeral services at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 10, 2008 at the Broadway Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Springdale Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 PM Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, and from 1 to 2 PM Sunday at the church. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Eleutherian College, Inc., the Salvation Army or the donor's favorite charity. Memorial envelopes are available at Lytle Funeral Chapel.
