Life story Mr. Charles Robert Shelley, age 69, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in Madison. He was born July 6, 1940 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Ernest B. and Martha A. Owens Shelley. Mr. Shelley grew up in Trimble County, Kentucky, and graduated from Trimble County High School in 1958. He attended Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky on a basketball scholarship. He served in the United States Air Force from November 1959 until November 1963.After basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he served at Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware, and Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. He was a member of the Air Freight Unit. He continued service for another two years with the Air Force Reserve at Bakalar Air Base in Columbus, Indiana. After his service, he returned to Madison and took employment with Reliance Electric Company, Frank Tea and Spice Company, Bensinger Furniture, and the Barber Grocery Company until the tornado of 1974. He then moved to the Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation, Madison Plant, and retired after twenty years. His memberships included the Milton, Kentucky, Baptist Church, the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge # 524 for forty-one years, Jefferson Post #9, American Legion for nine years, and was a former member of the Fair Play Fire Company #1, Madison. He was an avid fan of the Kentucky Wildcat Basketball team, the Cincinnati Reds, and enjoyed gardening and going to the beach. Surviving are his wife, the former Deanna Martin, to whom he was married on May 6, 1966 at the First Baptist Church, Madison; three sons: Jason M. Shelly and his wife , Kim of Indianapolis, Indiana, Charles Clark Shelley and his wife, Jennifer of Madison, and Michael J. Shelley of Camby, Indiana; five sisters: Sue Alexander and her husband, Buford of Deputy, Indiana, Judith Transier and her husband Dave, of Versailles, Indiana, Sandra Shelley of Madison, Rebecca Lutz and her husband, Joe of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Melissa Lee; one brother, Steve Shelley of Madison; and three grandsons: Henry, Alex and Burke Shelley. He was preceded in death by his father in 1998, his mother in 2002, and three brothers: Billy Joe Shelley in 1972, Greg Shelley in 2000 and Richard Shelley in 2001. The Reverend Robert Leach will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, with interment to follow in Springdale Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday, December 16, 2009 and from 10 to 11 AM Thursday at the funeral home.
