Please note this change. Thank you. Mr. Charles D. "Chuck" Stookey, age 82, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Waters of Clifty in Madison. He was born on October 21, 1928 in Melrose Park, Illinois, the son of Althea (Eyman) and Charles A. Stookey. Mr. Stookey was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He worked in the advertising department for General Grocer Company of Saint Louis before moving to Marsh Supermarkets as the Director of Media Advertising. He retired from there in May 1990 after twenty years of service. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II during the occupation of Japan. He was an avid art collector, had an eye for all things beautiful in life, a member of the Madison Art Club, and an avid golfer and bowler. He and his family visited Madison on weekends from 1978 until they moved here permanently in 1990. Survivors include his wife, the former Alice Budde, to whom he was married on November 4, 1950 in Belleville, Illinois; two daughters: Pam VonFange and her husband, John of O'Fallon, Missouri, and Jennifer Fight of Brecksville, Ohio; one son, Cliff Stookey of Madison; one sister, Marianne Walker and her husband, William of Texas; nine grandchildren: John and Mark VonFange, Kristina Randjelovic, Heather Palentchar, Kevan and C.J. Fight, and Hannah, Noah and Charli Stookey; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Don Fisher of Peoria, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Warren and John Stookey. The Reverend Joe Phelps will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Committal services will be conducted at 4:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery by the Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family request memorial contributions be made to Historic Madison, Inc., 500 West Street, Madison, Indiana 47250 or the Madison Art Club, in care of Lytle Funeral Chapel.
