Life story Charlotte "Louise" Humes Payne, age 84, of Madison, Indiana, passed away at 3:50 PM Thursday September 21, 2006 at the Waters of Clifty Falls. Born July 1, 1922 in Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Charlotte Jenkins Foree. Mrs. Payne moved to Madison at an early age, worked as a custodian for the Madison school system and retired from Lydia Middleton Elementary School after fifteen years of service. She had also worked for the King's Daughters' Hospital. She was a member of the Broadway Baptist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and loved to watch basketball and Red's baseball. She especially loved following her sons' basketball careers. Mrs. Payne is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Candy" Humes of Madison; four sons: Lawrence "Larry" Humes and his wife, CeCe of Indianapolis, Kenny Humes and his wife, Annette of Madison, Willie Humes and his wife, Susie of Elizabethtown, Indiana and Louis "June Bug" Humes of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two step-children, Helen Mumphrey and Bobby Mumphrey; seventeen grandchildren; twenty eight great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Humes, Sr.; her second husband, Charles Payne; four sons: Eddie Humes, Frank "Babe" Humes, Jr., Howard Humes, and Charles "Bo" Humes; two sisters, Elizabeth M. Smith and Minnie Seniors; one brother, Tony Foree; and a granddaughter, Clarissa Humes. The Reverend Bruce Rose and Reverend Robert Scott will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Tuesday September 26, 2006 at the Broadway Baptist Church in Madison. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens. Friends and family may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel and from 10:00 AM until time of the services on Tuesday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
