Obituary

Life story Mr. Dale L. Thompson, age 81, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at the Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hanover. He was born November 26, 1926 in Jefferson County, Indiana, in a house by the old Pleasant Point School, the son of Phillip and Elizabeth Etta Thurnall Thompson. Mr. Thompson went to grade school at Fort Donaldson and Smyrna, and graduated from the former North Madison High School in May, 1945. He was drafted in the United States Army on May 15, 1945 and served for eighteen months, having been honorably discharged on November 16, 1946 at the rank of Private First Class. He was in the artificial cattle breeding business from 1949 to 1968, and retired in 1990 from the Carpenter's Union where he has been a member since 1968. He later drove cars for Hadley Motors. Mr. Thompson was elected to the Madison City Council in 1980 before moving outside of the city in 1981. He was Democratic County Chairman form 1980-1984 and served five terms as a county councilman at-large from 1984 to 2004. He was a member of the North Madison Christian Church, a fifty year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Masonic Lodge; the Scottish Rite, Madison Moose Lodge, Jefferson Post #9 of the American Legion, the Madison Lions Club since 1956, and the Antioch Grange. He was also a "Sagamore of the Wabash." He loved spending his time fishing and square dancing with his wife. Survivors include his wife, the former Fern L. Smart, to whom he was married on November 22, 1946; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet Monroe and Dwight Short of Deputy, Indiana; two sons and daughters-in-law: Don and Darlene Thompson and Tony and Sally Thompson, all of Madison; one brother: Paul E. Thompson of Lancaster, Indiana; seven grandchildren: Donmichael Thompson of Franklin, Indiana, Derek Thompson of Columbus, Indiana, Julie Monroe and Janice Brittain, both of Madison, Jill Bowman of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dia Thompson of Clarksville, Indiana and Jessi Thompson of Madiosn; seven great grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Bob Thompson. Pastor Bob Hicks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the North Madison Christian Church, with interment to follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Friday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, and after 9 AM until time of services at the church on Saturday. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lions Cancer Fund of Indiana.
