Life story David R. "Beano" Goodman, 93, died April 17, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Boston, MA, in 1919, and grew up in Revere Beach, MA. He graduated in 1940 from M.I.T. where he was co-captain of the wrestling team. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1945, and was runner-up in the English National Wrestling Tournament in 1944. Promoted to Major in August of 1944, he received four combat stars for service with the Eighth Air Force Fighter Command, serving as its Chemical Warfare Officer. He remained in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He started Madison Chemical Company in a one-car garage in Madison in 1947. The business grew to include Biotechnics in Omaha, NE, which was started in 1965. He bought Dart Chemical in Pittsburgh in 1971 and started Stetson Chemical in Buffalo, NY, in 1973. He then bought Dico Chemical in Rock Island and Des Moines, renamed Di-Chem. Kane Molass Laboratories was acquired in 1983. He started the Boys' Club of America branch in Madison in 1954, which currently has over 1,000 boys and girls as members. He started the wrestling program at Hanover College in about 1950 and served as its first coach. He also started the high school wrestling program in Madison in about 1957, and trained the program's first coach, Paul "Duke" Meyer. He was a pro wrestler from 1949 to 1953, going by the names of "Mad Carlos," "Bull Martin," and "Beano" Goodman. He married Jeanette Turner, in 1942, who preceded him in death in 1986. In 1997, he married Kathryn J. Kraft, who taught Advance Placement Biology at Madison Consolidated High School. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Ann Selby Goodman, Hanover; one son, David R. "Dick" Goodman Jr., Hanover, and his wife, Constance McCubbin Goodman; one granddaughter, Hilary G. Drake, Vienna, Austria, and her husband, Michael Drake; one grandson, David W. E. Goodman, Atlanta, GA.; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Jeanette Drake, Vienna, Austria. A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday June 10, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Madison Elks Lodge, 1251 West Main Street, during which Dr. Stanley Caine will speak to the memory of Mr. Goodman beginning at 3:00 PM.
