Life story Dr. David W. Sloan, age 76, of Madison, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at King's Daughters' Hospital. Born on January 4, 1937 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was the son of Ralph D. and Vida M. (Weeks) Sloan. Dr. Sloan graduated from Howe Military School in Howe, Indiana where he was a wrestler and a thespian. He was an eight year cadet and will never be forgotten as a Son of Howe. He was also a student of Purdue University, where he was a member of the Delta Epsilon Fraternity. He left Purdue and entered the army, serving in Ethiopia working in communications. Upon his return he finished his Bachelors Degree at IU. He then entered the Indiana University School of Optometry and graduated in 1965. Dr. Sloan was an optometrist in Madison for nearly 50 years. He started his practice downtown, expanding to the hilltop, where he founded the Madison Vision Clinic. Since 2005, he has been associated with Kirkpatrick Eye Care Center. Dr. Sloan has been an active member of Christ Episcopal Church since 1966 and has served as Senior Warden of the Vestry, treasurer of the parish, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and trainer of generations of acolytes. He also served on the Diocesan Standing Committee. In 1974 David and Carole went on a Volunteer Optometrist in Service to Humanities (VOSH) mission trip to Haiti to provide examinations and glasses. Dr. Sloan was former chairman for the Madison Regatta Parade, and served as county chairman for the Democratic Party. In 1982, he was a candidate for the Indiana State Senate. He was a member of Union Lodge #2, F and AM, the Hanover Chapter #525 Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the Elks Lodge. Dr. Sloan was former president of the Optimist Club and a member of the Madison Rotary Club. He served as President of the Girl's Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Indiana Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He served 3 terms as President of the Indiana Optometric Southeast Society. David had a notable sense of humor and he loved to give advice. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, running, sailing and attending theater events. He was a family man - coaching, teaching and supporting his children and grandchildren. He was also host father to 6 exchange students from 4 countries: Horacio, Johanna, Sandra, Sara, Rocio and Jan. Survivors include his wife, the former Carole Yater, to whom he was married on February 19, 1971 at the Hanover College Chapel; his children: Sheila Butler and her husband, Prince of Bloomington, Indiana, and their children Nate, Cameron and Ryan; Eric Prime and his wife, Karla of Bargersville, Indiana, and their children Andrew, Alden and Alec; Ron Sloan and his wife, Valerie of Evansville, Indiana; Shannon Dattilo and her husband, Dan, and their children Devin, Adrianna, and Brycen; and Shelli Anderson and her husband, Mark, and their children Gavin, Sam and Sydney; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph D. and Vida M. (Weeks) Sloan, and one brother, Eugene "Buster" Sloan. The Reverend Evelyn Wheeler will conduct memorial services at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in the Christ Church Columbarium. Friends may call from 3 until 6 PM on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Following his wishes, the family will host a party to celebrate his life from 6 to 9 PM Saturday at the Livery Stable on Broadway in Madison.
