"Pete" O'Neal
February 19, 1931 – July 31, 2024
Elmer Lee "Pete" O'Neal, age 93, of Shelbyville, Indiana, and the son of the late Arch and Lillian (Aubrey) O'Neal, was born on February 19, 1931, in Carrollton, Kentucky. After graduating from high school, he enlisted into the United States Army on November 1, 1951. He served our country as a Private First Class until he was honorably discharged on October 15, 1953. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Sue (Wilcox) O'Neal and they enjoyed over 45 years together. For 35 years, he delivered mail for the United States Postal Service in Carrollton, Kentucky. He later worked as a fry cook at Long John Silvers in Madison for 18 years and then as a grocery clerk at the Jay C. Store in downtown Madison for seven years. Pete enjoyed reading his Bible every day and attended the First Christian Church of Hanover, Indiana for many years. In his spare time, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, watching old westerns on television, and taking care of his animals. He was a very loving man who never met a stranger. Mr. O'Neal passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus, Indiana. His life will be cherished by his daughters: Teresa Murphy and her husband, Benny of Louisville, Kentucky, Karen Combest and her husband, Bill of Warfield, Kentucky, and Jennifer Connors and her husband, Ryan of Shelbyville, Indiana; his grandchildren: Faith, Jasmine, Matthew, Jordy, Steven, Andre, Lekeshia, and Bianca; his great grandchildren: Ava Lynn, Jace, Cameron, Camden, Reginald Jr., Richard, Ramiyah, Javion, and Jianna; and several nieces and nephews including: Rusty & Carol Lee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Sue O'Neal who passed away on January 24, 2013; and his sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's hilltop. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 1:00 PM until the time of the service on Saturday.
Military honors will be presented by the United States Army and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9, American Legion following the service.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Pete O'Neal Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
