Obituary

Mr. Eugene L. Caldwell, age 90, of Madison, Indiana, and the son of the late Ferman and Mary (Johnson) Caldwell, was born on June 14, 1932, in the small town of Smithville in DeKalb County, Tennessee. He attended eight years of grammar school in Cairo, Illinois, graduating in 1946, and then went on to attend Heath High School in West Paducah, Kentucky where he graduated in 1950. He was proud to say former Kentucky Governor Julian Carroll and his wife were friends and classmates. After graduation, he attended Paducah Junior College in 1951, where he studied Civil Engineering. He began working as an Engineering Aide II, doing surveying for Tennessee Valley Authority until October of 1951. On October 31, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where he served as a Senior Personnel Specialist. After being honorably discharged from active duty on August 31, 1955, he served in the Kentucky Army National Guard until April 1960. After proudly serving his country, he attended Murray State University where he majored in chemistry. In 1960, he began working as a professional lab chemist and spent the majority of his career in uranium enrichment with Allied Signal/Honeywell Metropolis Works in Metropolis, Illinois. He was proud to be a "Cold War Warrior" in his service of his country. On St. Patrick's Day in 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Nancy A. Hayes of Paducah, Kentucky and this union was blessed with two sons: David and Michael Caldwell. Eugene always loved serving others who were in the military, helping during the cold war, being active in his church, PTA, and disaster relief. He loved the University of Kentucky Wildcats Men's Basketball team, fishing, and most especially his dog, Katie. More recently, he enjoyed visiting with his buddies at Autumn Trace. Mr. Caldwell passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. His life will be cherished by his children: David Caldwell (Rena) and Michael Caldwell (Nancy), both of Madison; and his grandchildren: Megan Caldwell, Katrena Gobert, Makazley and Logan Caldwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nancy A. Caldwell. Pastor Scott Murphy will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison, with interment to follow.
