Life story Mr. Forrest D. "Frosty" Patterson, age 86, of Madison, passed away on Monday, November 29, 2010 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on April 25, 1924 in Brooksburg, Indiana, the son of Joseph and Coyla Brinson Patterson. He was inducted into the United States Army on March 18, 1943 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, and served in the 4233rd Quartermaster Sterilization Company. He was discharged on December 19, 1945 as a Technician 4th Grade. While in the Army, he attended cooks and bakers school at Fort Sam Houston, and served in the Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland battle campaigns. He was qualified in the SS Carbine Rifle and the M-1 Rifle. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Prior to his military service, he worked as a farm hand. After returning to civilian life, he owned and operated a Standard Oil service station, the Hilltop Restaurant and the Airways Tavern, all in Madison. He retired as a supervisor in the psychiatric unit of the Madison State Hospital. He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodge, and Past Exhalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in New Albany, the DAV, and a former member of the Eagles Lodge and Redmans Lodge in New Albany. He raised and trained bird dogs and enjoyed going to the casino boats. Survivors include his former wife, Nellie Patterson of Madison; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Curtis Todd of Madison; one step-daughter and son-in-law, Mary Christine and Bill Miller of Antioch, Tennessee; four grandchildren: Christopher Todd and his fianc, Eva Shields, Chauncey Todd, and Mike Briddle and his wife, Terri, all of Madison, and Angie Phagan and her husband, Troy, of Vevay, Indiana; two great grandchildren: Riley and Mallory Phagan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Coyla Brinson Patterson; and six siblings: James, Joe, Harley, Jesse, Edith and Laura Jean. The Reverend Robert Leach will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel with interment to follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, will conduct military graveside services. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 PM Thursday, December 2, 2010 and from 10 to 11 AM Friday at the funeral home.
