Starts at 1:00 pm
Fred Michael Mahaffey, Sr., age 70, of Hanover, Indiana, and the son of the late Carman and Martha Bell (Lamb) Mahaffey, was born on August 1, 1955, in Batesville, Indiana. He attended Batesville High School and began his working career at Union Furniture Company. He later worked in security at Indian Lakes in Batesville before dedicating over thirty years of service to the Batesville Street Department, until his retirement.
In earlier years, Fred was a member of the Conservation Club in Oldenburg. He treasured time spent with his children, especially taking them fishing and camping when they were young. In his free time, he enjoyed dabbling in a variety of hobbies, with a special passion for ham radio, where he was known by his call sign, KB9ZOK. Fred also loved cooking, watching YouTube, playing games, spending time with his son, attending his grandchildren's recreational activities and sharing meals out with his friends, John and Larry. He had a great sense of humor and a deep appreciation for music, particularly from the 1960s and 1970s including his favorite artists: Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Fred was a simple man, trying to lead a simple life. Mr. Mahaffey passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at his residence in Hanover.
His life will be cherished by his children: Shannon Holm and her husband, Christopher of Smithfield, Virginia, Fred M. "Mike" Mahaffey, Jr. of Hanover, and Amber Giltner and her husband, Ricky of Lexington, Indiana; his sister: Wanda Jean Rose and her husband, Ray of Batesville; his grandchildren: Brianne, Taron, Benjamin, Ethan, Leilah, Rahelynn, Pagerick, and Wesley; his great grandchildren: Ainsley, Hendrix, and one whom he was anxiously waiting to be born in July 2026; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Carman Mahaffey, and his mother, Martha Bell Mahaffey.
Honoring Fred's wishes, cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at the Batesville Knights of Columbus.
Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison is in charge of arrangements.
