Life story Mr. George Walter Schafer, age 77, of Hanover, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. He was born on February 22, 1930 in Henryville, Indiana, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Schubnel Schafer. Mr. Schafer was a graduate of Henryville High School, and served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He retired on March 1, 1990 as a unit supervisor at the Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corporation, Clifty Creek plant, after 35 years of service. Mr. Schafer was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary V. Kitten, to whom he was married on November 27, 1958 in Louisville, Kentucky; three daughters: Mary Martha Schafer of Hanover, Sister Mary Frances Schafer, OSB, and Rose Connelly and her husband, Bill, all of Louisville, Kentucky; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl Thomas and Barbara Schafer of Muncie, Indiana; two sisters: Martha Vest and Delphine Rothbauer; two grandchildren: George B. Schafer and Hannah Schafer; one godchild, Jerri McCullough; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Schafer; and three sisters: Pauline Houch, Virginia Mullins and Elizabeth Ann Neville Lewis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend John Meyer at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Saint Magdalene Cemetery, Madison. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Chapel from 2:00 until 7:00 PM Friday, January 18, and from 12:00 to 12:30 PM Saturday. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, the Alzheimer's Association, the Sisters of Saint Benedict in Ferdinand, Indiana, or the Missionaries of Charity.
