Life story Mr. Herman E. Hoffman, age 87, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. He was born on December 27, 1918 in Madison, the son of the late Matthew and Clara Hunger Hoffman. He was married to the former Rozella Allen on November 23, 1948 at the former Saint Mary's Catholic Church, and were married for 55 years until her death. Mr. Hoffman graduated from the former Saint Mary's Grade School and was a 1936 graduate of Madison High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He worked as a bricklayer with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers for many years. After retirement, he was a regional sales manager for the American Lubricants Company of Dayton, Ohio. He and his brother John also owned the former Jefferson County Distributors. Mr. Hoffman was a former Madison city councilman, an active member of the Jefferson County Democrat Party, where he was a precinct committeeperson. He served on the first board of directors of the Friends of Shawe and Pope John Schools and was a 4-H leader with his wife for several years. He was a member for over 50 years of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Lodge, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #524, where he was also a Past Exalted Ruler, American Legion, Jefferson Post #9, the Walnut Street Fire Company #4. He especially loved and enjoyed his children and grandchildren, and volunteer work in the community. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially farming. Survivors include eight children: Carolyn Stutler and her husband Richard of Madison, and their children Michael and Amy; Herman Hoffman, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Conroe, Texas; Mary Truitt and her husband John of Fishers, Indiana, and their children Jenny and Wendy; Fred Hoffman and his wife Sonya of Hartford City, Indiana and their children Nick, Aaron and Katrina; Marilyn Jean Huling Faulkenburg and her husband David of New Salisbury, Indiana and their children Patia and Gavin; Jim Hoffman and his wife Resa of Madison, and their children Logan and Cortney; Rose Marie Roberts and her husband Norman of Madison, and their children Kristen, Kimberly and Megan; and Frank Hoffman and his wife Lisa of Maineville, Ohio, and their children David, Elizabeth and Peter; one great grandson, Ryan Stutler; one sister, Marcella "Sis" Hoffman of Madison; and five brothers: Robert Hoffman, Maurice Hoffman, Joe Hoffman, Clem Hoffman and John Hoffman, all of Madison. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife on December 23, 2003, and one brother, Matt Hoffman on December 27, 1998. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend John Meyer on Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Price of Peace Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Saint Patrick's Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 PM Sunday and from 9 AM to 10:30 AM Monday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Sunday at Lytle Funeral Chapel. The Honor Guard of the American Legion, Jefferson Post #9 will conduct military graveside services on Monday.
