Obituary

Life story June L. "Jake" Gayle, age 83, of Madison, Indiana passed away at 2:50 PM Friday May 6, 2005 at King's Daughters' Hospital. Born January 24, 1922 in Oldham County, Kentucky, he was the son of June and Fannie Mae (Taylor) Gayle, who preceded him in death. Mr. Gayle retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground as an Explosives Operator. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Lancaster Baptist Church, Dupont Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1969, and the Conservation Club. He was a former board member of Nevilles Grove and Dupont Cemetery. He was a longtime member of the Jefferson County Democrat Party, having served as County Commissioner, County Councilman, and precinct committeeman. He enjoyed playing the fiddle in a local bluegrass band and loved fishing, farming, and tending to his cows. Mr. Gayle is survived by his wife, Dolores E. (Jackson) Gayle, whom he married on March 30, 1949; a daughter, Penny J. Gayle of Madison; two sons: Darrell W. Gayle of Lancaster, IN, Mark E. Gayle of Lancaster; two sisters: Elizabeth Hammers of Louisville, Violet Fewell of Lancaster; two brothers: Tom Gayle of Madison, Dee Gayle of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Beard; and two brothers, Warren "Short" Gayle and Tripp Barickman. The Reverend Aubrey Bessinger will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday June 8, 2005 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, 423 W. Main Street, Madison, with burial to follow in Dupont Cemetery. Friends and family may gather from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday June 7, 2005 and after 10 AM on Wednesday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Masonic memorial services will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM at the funeral chapel. The Honor Guard of the American Legion, Jefferson Post #9 will conduct full military rites at the graveside. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the King's Daughters' Hospice. Contribution cards are available at the funeral chapel.
