Obituary

Life story Mr. James Ray "Smitty" Smith, age 92, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in Portland. Born February 21, 1921 in Madison, Indiana, he was the son of Albert and Helen Strausmeier Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1939 graduate of the former Central High School. Following graduation, he worked locally on dairy farms and then moved to Akron, Ohio and worked for the Goodyear Company building airplane assemblies. After hearing of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Navy, took his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, and was then transferred to Hawaii where he spent the rest of his military career. Following his military service, he heard that Greyhound Bus Lines was hiring veterans, so in 1945 he started his career with Greyhound and retired from there in 1976. In 1948 he married his former wife, Joan Richardson and moved to the Indianapolis area. In 1999, he moved to Denver, Colorado and then onto Portland, Oregon. He was a Methodist and enjoyed his family and friends, playing cards, eating out, visiting family in California, watching the History Channel and John Wayne westerns. Survivors include two sons: Larry Smith and his companion, Dana Bloss of Denver, Colorado, and Alan Smith and his wife, Angela of Portland; one sister, Susie Craighead of Washington; three brothers: Robert Smith of Washington, and Donald and Eugene Smith of California; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Elda Coad and Edith Smith; and three brothers: Earl, Charles and Wilbur Smith. The Reverend Robert Leach will conduct memorial services at 10AM Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel.
