Obituary

JoAnn Cheatham passed away on Monday, March 15, 2021 surrounded by her daughter and son at the Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.

JoAnn was born in Madison, Indiana on March 5, 1931. She was the daughter of Lillian Rose Schoenstein and Cecil Melvin Short. On September 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Thomas "Tuck" Cheatham, and they enjoyed 58 years together until his death on October 22, 2008.

JoAnn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and GGma. She was a stay at home mom until her children reached high school. Then she worked in administration at Hanover College for 26 years until her retirement. She achieved her dream of owning and furnishing a historic home on Main Street in downtown Madison. She loved decorating and restoring antiques. She was "a kid" at Christmas, always creating the most lovely holidays possible in her antique masterpiece!

JoAnn is survived by her daughter, Lynn Cheatham Eder and her husband, Tom of North Vernon, Indiana; her son, Mark Cheatham and his wife, Linda of Madison; her grandchildren: Meredith Eder of Captain Cook, Hawaii, Tom Cheatham and his wife, Traci of McCordsville, Indiana; Jennifer Cheatham Neff and her husband, Erich of Fishers, Indiana; Kyle Cheatham and his wife, Melissa of Omaha, Nebraska; Cami Helton and her husband, Kyle of Madison; and Sam Ferguson and his fiance, Tess Lemen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; her great grandchildren: Alexa, Claire, and Adi Cheatham, Jack and Kate Neff, Cole, Grayson and Ella Cheatham, and Finn and Lucas Helton; her sister-in-law, Zona Short of Bloomington, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter-in-law, Lisa Kugler Cheatham; her brother, Charles "Bud" Short; her sister, Carolee Goebel and her husband, Dick; her brothers-in-law: Gene Cheatham and his wife, Vera, Buck Cheatham and his wife, Nancy, Bardo Cheatham and his wife, Bonnie, Larry Cheatham, and JC Lee; and her sisters-in-law: Thelma Wehner and her husband, Charles, Dorothy Sands and her husband, Red, Nancy Lee, and Linda Cheatham.

Reverend Christopher Craig will conduct the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 413 E. Second Street, Madison with interment to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Madison. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's Hilltop from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, March 17, 2021, and from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Thursday. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cheatham Family Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
