Life story Mr. John C. Kaltenbacher, age 74, of Hanover, Indiana, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, Indiana. Born July 27, 1939 in Evansville, Indiana, he was the son of Joseph Paul and Lillie Mae (Ambrose) Kaltenbacher. Mr. Kaltenbacher retired from the United States Air Force on September 30, 1980 at Mather Air Force Base in California, having enlisted on June 17, 1958 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He retired as a senior master sergeant, served in the Viet Nam War and received the Airman Medal for Bravery. He retired in 2001 as an engineering instructor for Florida Power and Light and moved to Hanover in 2002. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Madison, where he helped pray the Rosary with the elderly, Jefferson Post #9 American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1969. He cherished his dog, Pooh Bear and loved going to church. Coaching football and softball, watching TV and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, were favorite things of his to do. Survivors include one son, John M. Kaltenbacher and his wife, Joyce of Holland, Indiana; two daughters: Cinda Starcher and her husband, Russell of Pomeroy, Ohio and Michelle Ruffin and her husband, Chester of Killeen, Texas; one step-daughter, Kendra Perry and her husband, Jason of Hanover; one step-son, Kenneth W. Garrett and his wife, Melinda of Hanover; eight grandchildren: Haley and Abbey Garrett, Michael Perry, Jessica Kahle, Ashley Wagner, Heather Howard and Amber and Jacob Ruffin; and three great grandchildren: Henry Kahle, Noah Wagner, Jaythan Howard. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, the former Reba McAlister, to whom he was married on August 27, 1985 in Inverness, Florida, and who passed away on April 29, 2011; one brother, Paul J. "Bus" Kaltenbacher; and one sister, Mary Lee Haan. The Reverend Chris Craig will conduct The Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. Entombment will be in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Evansville, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time/1:00 PM Central Time on Thursday. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home and military funeral honors will be provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard at the cemetery.
