Obituary

Life story John Clifford Walburn, age 65, of Madison, Indiana, passed away Friday, November 12, 2010 at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born Friday, April 6, 1945 in Marion, Indiana, the son of Rex R. and Norma Clifford Walburn. Mr. Walburn was a United States Navy veteran. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in education from Ball State University in 1969; his Master's Degree in Special Education from Ball State in 1975, and his Juris Doctorate Degree from the indiana University Scool of Law in 1991. He also attended numerous training courses and seminars in law, business, management, leadership, etc. He previously had worked as the Executive Director of Community Alternatives for southeast Indiana at ResCare; Vice-President of Operations at Cardinal Service Management (OCCAZIO); Case Manager at FSSA Bureau of Development Disabilities in Indianapolis; Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services in Indianapolis; Director at FATE Center in Connersville, Indiana; and Hillcroft Services in Muncie, Indiana. Mr. Walburn was a musician. As Music Chairperson for the Madison Ribberfest, John and the late Jeff Garrett brainstormed many times about starting another festival with folk music. After Jeff's death, John helped start the Ohio River Valley Folk Festival,co-coordinating the inaugural event with Steve Thomas. John's passion for the Folk Festival led him to be the festival coordinator every year since. John was a member of the Prince Of Peace Catholic Church, the Planning Commission in Muncie, Madison Chamber of Commerce, Southern Indiana Arts Council, Ohio Valley Celtic Society, Special Olympics, President of Pathways board, and very active member and past board member of INARF. His many hobbies included boating, reading, movies, Crossword Puzzles, trivia, sports - especially the Cubs and Colts - was an actor with Spectrum Productions and enjoyed cooking. Survivors include his son, Dr. Geoff Walburn and his wife, Kelly, of Madison; one daughter, Abby Walburn of Hanover, his mother, Norma Walburn of Hanover, and three sisters: Phyllis Hawkins, and her husband, Fred of Aiken, South Carolina, Sharon Neal of Hanover and Barbara Walburn of Hanover; two grandsons: Caleb and Carson Denton; two nieces: Emily and Erin Neal; one great niece and three great nephews; his first wife, Linda Lock of Milton, Kentucky and his second wife, Mitzi Walburn of Hanover. He was preceded in death by his father, Rex R. Walburn on April 6, 1999 and an aunt, Ruthann Clifford. The Reverend John Meyer will conduct funeral services at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at Prince Of Peace Catholic Church, 413 East Second Street, Madison. A musical celebration will follow the funeral service until 11:00 PM Tuesday at the Livery Stable, 313 Broadway Street, Madison. Friends may call from 4:00 PM till 8:00 PM on Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel and from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the funeral home. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Ohio River Valley Folk Festival, C/O Lytle Funeral Chapel. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
