Obituary

Life story Mrs. Lura Lorraine Gray, 93, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. She was born February 6, 1916 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the daughter of Harvey M. and Mae (Stanton) Brooke. At the age of fourteen, Mrs. Gray took her motto "Think Tall". She was a polio victim at the age of 15 years, having had fifteen breaks in her right leg and four in her left leg. On crutches for 47 years, she climbed mountains, waded in oceans and climbed steps to see our historical wonders. Mrs Gray had been an avid doll collector since 1964, and owned and operated an antique doll museum in Algoma, Wisconsin. In 1965, she started Wisconsin's only doll show and operated it for 22 years. She was a certified doll doctor, repairing and costuming dolls from all over the United States and around the world. Mrs Gray and her husband, Reverend Harold E. Gray, were singing evangelists covering five states prior to him going into the ministry. She served along side her husband for 32 years as a United Methodist minister. Mrs. Gray stated that her most rewarding experience came when Chief Oshkosh of Egg Harbor, Wisconsin made her a honorary Indian princess, naming her Princess Wiakensoai, which means Snow Bird. Chief Oshkosh was the last hereditary Indian chief of the Menominee tribe and made only one other lady an honorary princess and that was his wife. Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, to whom she was married on February 7, 1937; her son, Harvey D. Gray who was killed during the Vietnam War. Reverend Randy Jungkurth will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the North United Methodist Church, 2235 Allen Street, with interment to follow in the Brooksburg Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 PM Friday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel and from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the church.
