Obituary

Life story Marie Matilda Thinnes Lichlyter, 89, of Madison, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014, at The Waters of Clifty Falls. Born in China, Indiana, on March 4, 1925, Marie was the daughter of Mathias Joseph Thinnes and Cardula Mary Schafer Thinnes. She graduated from Central High School in 1943. In 1969, she graduated from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, where she earned a bachelor's and later a master's degree in education. She taught for 16 years at Five Points Elementary School in Fairborn, Ohio. Marie married Dwight William Lichlyter on August 1, 1945, and lived in Alameda, California, for several months after World War II. Later, the couple lived in Ohio and Florida, but spent most of their lives in and around Madison. Marie enjoyed being a docent for Historic Madison, Inc., and participating in activities at the Senior Citizen Center. A lover of reading, she served as a volunteer for the library's Adult Literacy Program. She enjoyed cruises and traveled extensively. She traveled to all 50 of the States and 6 out of the 7 continents. Marie was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Porter of Madison and Margaret Yates of Port Angeles, Washington, and by her son, John Lichlyter of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Sommer of Madison; her brother, Charles Thinnes of Beech Grove, Indiana; five grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight; her parents, Mathias and Cardula Thinnes; a sister, Catherine Ringwald; an infant brother, George Leo Thinnes; and a granddaughter, Bridget Porter. A celebration of life will be held September 27 at 11 a.m. at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Church Cemetery in China, Indiana. Friends may call at the Lytle Chapel from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 26, and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, September 27. A Rosary Service, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26.
