Life story Mary Ann Smith Garrett, 76, of Madison died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the King's Daughters' Hospital. She was born in Madison, IN, on October 5, 1933, to Evelyn May Phillips and William E. Smith, Sr. She graduated from Madison High School in 1951 and the Louisville General School of Nursing in 1954. She worked for KDH for 33 years, Hanover Nursing Home for 8 years, and Madison State Hospital for 5 years. She was a member of St. John's Church of Christ, worked with Cub Scouts, was past President of Jefferson County Cancer Society, and active in Jefferson County Heart Association and Indiana Nurses Association. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Otha Garrett, one daughter-in-law, Lisa Garrett of Madison, four grandchildren, Michelle Garrett James and husband, Matt, Andrew Garrett and wife, Alex, all of Carmel, Jesse Garrett and MacKenzie Garrett of Waterloo, great-granddaughter, Madalyn James, one sister, Doris Smith Staples and husband, Kenneth, Bedford, KY and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Jeffrey Otha Garrett and David Michael Garrett, one daughter-in-law, Ann McIntosh Garrett, one brother, William E Smith, Jr., and wife, Jackie, and one sister, Gloria Jean Smith Hudson and husband, Durward E. Hudson. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 3, at St. John's United Church of Christ at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until time of the service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. John's United Church of Christ.
