Life story Melissa A. Murphy Hackney, age 48, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at her residence due to a long battle with cancer. She was born on March 8, 1959 in Madison, the daughter of Dale, Jr. and Madge B. Batschlet Murphy. Mrs. Hackney was a graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and a member of the North United Methodist Church. She had worked for the former Star Food Store on Main Street for many years, and then at the Jay-C Store in downtown Madison until illness forced her retirement. She was also an animal lover (especially dogs and cats) and a bargain shopper. Survivors include her husband, Dennie L. Hackney, to whom she was married on July 9, 1988; her mother of Madison; one son, Brent M. Miller and his companion, Tammy Wimpee, of Madison; two brothers: Danny Murphy of Carrollton, Kentucky and Roger Murphy of Madison; and two nephews: Sean Murphy of Madison and Troy Murphy of New Albany, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her father, Dale Murphy, Jr. The Reverend Robert Leach conducted private funeral services on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in Springdale Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the North United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
