Obituary

Life story Myra J. Laughlin, age 84, of Madison, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. Born July 10, 1927 in Bloomfield, Indiana, she was the daughter of Frank and Iva Alma (Duke) Laughlin. Miss Laughlin was a 1945 graduate of Sullivan, Indiana High School and earned an AB degree in music education in 1949 from the former Indiana State Teachers College, now known as Indiana State University in Terre Haute. From 1950 until her arrival in Madison, she taught choral music and band in various schools throughout Northern Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. In 1966, she began her longest tenure as a music teacher in the Madison School system, retiring in 1983. She was an accomplished accompanist, having accompanied many students and professors at Hanover College and at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. She played for the Madison Performing Arts Foundation, the MADPAC Children's Choir, and students performing at ISMA district and state vocal contests. She was the pianist for many Madison High School Theatre musicals, and taught piano privately to many students in the Madison area. She was in much demand as an accompanist for community concerts, having played for concerts led by Lynn Maricle, Drusilla Tripp and the late Alva Tripp. At the time she was stricken ill in February, 2011, she was serving as the church pianist and choir accompanist at the First Baptist Church, Madison. Survivors include one brother, Robert Laughlin, Ph.D. and his wife, Eunila Maria of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Reva L. Wantland of Orlando, Florida; and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Waneta R. Pyne. Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Brian Teater at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the First Baptist Church, with interment to follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Bloomfield, Indiana. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Myra J. Laughlin Memorial Music Program at the First Baptist Church. Contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home and the church.
