Life story Mr. Phillip Fostean Harris, age 65, of Madison, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Franciscan Saint Anthony Health in Michigan City, Indiana. He was born on August 2, 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Benjamin Fostean and Ida (Gazaway) Harris. Mr. Harris enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on May 25, 1972 in Wayne, Michigan, and served three tours in Viet Nam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Mast, a Rifle Expert Badge, four Letters of Appreciation and the Good Conduct Medal. His last duty assignment was as a jailer of the Marine barracks at the Correction Center, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was discharged from active duty on May 8, 1975 at Camp Pendleton, California, and from the Marine Corp Reserves on May 24, 1978. He was a professional carpenter, starting as the youngest apprentice in the union, and retired from the Carpenter's Local Union #631 in Charlestown after many years. He once traveled with the rodeo as a bull rider, winning a championship buckle. He also owned and operated a construction business and a lumber business while living in Georgia. He was a member of the Madison Salvation Army, where he enjoyed volunteering, and formerly served on its Emergency Disaster Service Team. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and enjoyed cooking and raising horses. He was known for his generosity and kindness to others, and would often let children ride his horses and ponies. He is survived by his fiance, Freda Johnson of Madison; one step-daughter, Lisa Noell Bisgaard of Centerville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two step-sons: Daniel Dunn and Tommy Joe Noell. Lt. Matthew Phelps conducted funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
