Life story Mr. Robert G. "Bob" Gray, age 85, of Hanover, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2012 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. Born September 7, 1926 in Anderson, Indiana, he was the son of Robert Veburn and Edna Viola (Howell) Gray. Mr. Gray graduated from Hagerstown, Indiana High School, completing his studies after serving in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the SS Dobbin. He then obtained his degree in history from Ball State Teachers College in Muncie in 1951. He moved to the Hanover area in 1954 after living in Hagerstown and Osgood. Mr. Gray worked as a contractual insurance adjuster and owned and operated Lincoln Trails Adjusting Company of Hanover. He was still active at the time of his death. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, and was a founding member of Save the Valley. He was currently serving on the board of directors of the Indiana Utility Rate Payer's Trust, and had been since its inception. He also served as a board member of the Jefferson County Park Board, the Saluda Township Advisory Board, and was a member of the Democrat Party. Mr. Gray was also a musician, playing the coronet in many bands locally and across the state, including the Windjammer's Band, Madison Community Band, the River Cities Band, and the Corydon Band. He also wrote a novel several years ago, telling a story of Indiana's - and particularly Madison and Jefferson County's - participation in the Civil War. It was called "The Elephant." Survivors include his wife, the former Dorothy Study, whom he married on December 23, 1949 in Charlestown, Indiana; one son, Marc Gray and his wife, Candi of Madison; two daughters: Sharon Gray of Madison and Tracy Gray of Hanover; five grandchildren: Anne Grzymajlo and her husband, Jeff, Beau "Beege" Gray and his wife Sasha, Jessie Gray and her fianc Daniel Butler, Chad Gray and Kasie Lessley, and Lesley Steinhardt; four great grandchildren: Alexander Grzymajlo, Calli Alderman, Taytum Gray, and Marcus Porter Gray; his sister-in-law, Deloris Gray of Connersville, Indiana; two nieces: Mary and Sherry; and two nephews: Norman, Jr. and Ken. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Thomas Gray on January 5, 1969; and one brother, Norman Gray, Sr. The Reverend Charlotte Nash will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at the Lytle Funeral Chapel, with interment to follow in New Bethel Cemetery near Chelsea. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion will conduct military graveside services. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 PM Monday, June 25 and from 10 to 11 AM Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Save the Valley.
