Life story Mr. Ulysses Proffitt, age 85, of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at the Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Indiana. Born December 20, 1925 in Clay County, Kentucky, he was the son of Charlie and Lucy Owens Proffitt. He served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 with the 7th Army, 100th Infantry having been discharged as a sergeant. He then worked for 37 years as a pressman for the Indianapolis Star newspaper, retiring in 1989. He and his wife moved to North Vernon from Indianapolis in 1989. He enjoyed bowling, golf and card games. He was also known for his craftsmanship in woodworking. Survivors include four daughters: Lillie Jeffers, Janice McKenna and Nadine Tascott and her husband Dave, all of North Vernon, and Gwendolyn Proffitt of Indianapolis; three sons: Doyle Proffitt and his wife, Tracy of Mesa, Arizona, Mark Proffitt and his wife, Pam of Ingals, Indiana, and Dennis Proffitt and his wife, Debra of Indianapolis; one sister, Nanny Pearl Minton of Manchester, Kentucky; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, the former Zella Minton, to whom he was married on December 20, 1946 in London, Kentucky, and who passed away on April 3, 2006; three brothers and five sisters. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, with interment to follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post # 9, American Legion, will also conduct military services. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Chapel from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday, February 13, 2011.
