Dr. Wendell Hall Grassmyer, age 94, of Madison, Indiana, and the son of the late Oscar and Elizabeth (Hall) Grassmyer, was born on December 23, 1927, in Monticello, Indiana. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army on March 21, 1947 and rose to the rank of Sergeant, until he was honorably discharged on March 26, 1950. After proudly serving his country, he enrolled at Indiana University to become a dentist. He devoted 58 years to meeting the dental needs of this community from his iconic dental office on Main Street in downtown Madison, often remembered for its holiday decor. On March 25, 1989, he was united in marriage to the former Carol Wells at First Baptist Church in Madison, and they enjoyed over 33 wonderful years together.
In his spare time, he enjoyed dancing with his wife at the Moose Lodge, taking pictures, and walking everyday. In his earlier years, he enjoyed roller skating each weekend, riding motorcycles, and was a trick water skier in college. He was a member of the Madison Moose Lodge, the Major Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion, and the Madison Elks Lodge #524. Above all, he was a family man at heart. Dr. Grassmyer passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Hickory Creek at Madison.
His life will be cherished by his wife, Carol of Madison; his children: Dr. Richard Grassmyer and his wife, Marcia of Salem, Indiana, and Loren Wilson and his wife, Tina of Ocala, Florida; his sister: Annas Flora and her husband, Keith of Brookston, Indiana; his grandchildren: Michael Grassmyer and his wife, Dr. Kate of Brownsburg, Indiana, Kayla Goins and her husband, Freddy of Ocala, and Clark Wilson of Ocala; his great grandson: Jason Todd Grassmyer of Brownsburg; two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Friday, October 14, 2022 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's hilltop. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 5:00 PM until the time of the service on Friday. Private interment will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens at a later date.
