Obituary

Life story Winnie B. Smith, age 92, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Norton Women's & Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Born January 2, 1926 in Madison, she was the daughter of Louis G. and Matilda F. (Graham) Burkhardt. She was a graduate of Madison High School. She was married in 1942 and had four children, Gary, Sheri, Peggy, and Norman and later on February 10, 1978, she was united in marriage to Darryl A. Smith in Springfield, Tennessee. She retired after many years of being a teller at the Madison Bank and Trust Company. She had formerly worked at WORX and owned and operated The Doll House where she crafted her own dolls. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church and a fifty-year member of the Phi Beta Psi. She served as past treasurer for the Madison Regatta Inc., was an associate member of the Madison Jefferson County Teacher's Association, was a Kiwanian, and enjoyed visiting flea markets. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Darryl; her sons: Gary D. Smith and his wife, Mary Alice of Tullahoma, Tennessee and Norman Smith of Madison; her daughters: Sheri Rogers and her husband, Randy of Madison and Peggy Swing and her husband, Randy of Bloomington, Minnesota; her step-daughter, Donna Hallgarth and her husband, Buck of Madison; her sister-in-law, Orena Burkhardt of Madison; eight grandchildren: Melissa Tartock, Deanna Hutson, Mark Smith, Brad Smith, Steven Smith, David Smith, Jeff Swing, and Tim Swing; seventeen great grandchildren: Jalayna Hutson, Lylah Hutson, Tristen Smith, Katelynn Alvey, Lucas Smith, Casey Smith, Jacob Smith, Ty Smith, Eden Smith, Brody Smith, Mary McBride Smith, Carrie Ella Smith, Lewis Burkhardt Smith, Logan Swing, Stella Swing, Aidan Swing, and Siena Swing. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Louis Burkhardt, Jr.; and her nephew, Steven Burkhardt. The Reverend Evelyn Wheeler will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the Christ Episcopal Church, 506 Mulberry Street, Downtown Madison, with interment to follow in Springdale Cemetery. The Phi Beta Psi will conduct memorial services at 7:30 PM Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, on Madison's hilltop. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 5, 2018, and from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Phi Beta Psi Cancer Project or the donor's choice.
