Daniel Payne Obituary

Life story Daniel Payne Jr., age 84, passed away at King's Daughters' Hospital on November 23, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Dan was born May 15, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Gladys Winkfield Payne and Dan Payne. He grew up in Carrollton, Kentucky where he attended Dunbar Elementary School. Because of segregation in Kentucky at the time, Dan attended the all black high school, the Lincoln Institute in Lincoln Ridge Kentucky graduating in 1954. From 1954 to 1956, he served as a paratrooper in the United States Army. Dan then married his high school sweetheart, Susie Lewis in 1954. To that union was born a daughter, Denise Payne (Dowell). Susie passed away in 1976. On December 30, 1990, Dan married Elsie Cosby-Perry and remained married until his death. Dan was a very loved and well liked person, always greeting you with a smile. He began work at IKEC (now OVEC) in 1958 as a laborer and rose through the ranks to become Supervisor ASOE in the operations department before retiring in 1996. Not wanting grass to grow under his feet, he became a "part time" school bus driver where he loved the children as his own. He also drove in his spare time the Madison Cubs bus for the football and basketball teams, and literally any other team that needed a driver. He drove the bus for his great grand-daughter's swim meets, basketball and volleyball games. Dan was a faithful member of the Masonic Order joining Blue House becoming a Master Mason, Madison, Indiana in 1985. He also served as Worshipful Master. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Patron. He served as Imperial Deputy of the Oasis, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Muncie, Indiana #129, where he served as treasurer. He belonged to Malta Consistory #34, Richmond, Indiana and was a member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge - Eureka Lodge #30, Madison, Indiana. He was the Potentate Deputy of the Oasis, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and he was crowned to 33rd degree in 1996. He was a member and became Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge #524 in Madison, Indiana. Dan was a member of the Madison City Zoning Board and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Dan loved reading, dancing, and his University of Kentucky Wildcats. He also enjoyed golf until his health began to fail. Left to cherish the memories of Dan are his wife: Elsie, daughter: Denise Dowell (Craig), step-daughter: Cheryl Carter (Keith), grandchildren: Marcus Payne and Erin Carter, great grandchildren: Tyesha Thompson, De Marcus Dade, Ka'Mya Prim, Kahmari, Maddox and Braxton Payne. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter: Suzanne, a son: Wayne, and grandchildren: Erin Dade, Cory Dade, and Evan Carter. A private family service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's Hilltop. Face masks and social distancing will be required. A memorial service with last rites from The Masonic Order and The Elks Lodge will be held at a later date.
