James Dwight Ashby, age 74, of Madison, Indiana, and the son of the late Raymond and Viola (Goins) Ashby, was born on July 28, 1950, in Madison. After graduating from high school, he proudly served our country in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Joan Carol (Bott) Ashby and they were blessed with one son, Joey. James worked at the desk at the Hillside Inn until 1982, and then he worked security for Knuckles & Associates and for the strikes. Shortly after, he began working as a delivery driver for Greves TV & Appliance until 1993. In his spare time, he enjoyed John Wayne and World War I & II movies, fishing, hunting, old Westerns, the outdoors, and walking around town. He attended church services at the Salvation Army of Madison. Without any hesitation, James would give you the shirt off of his back. He was a good man who was always friendly to everyone he met. Mr. Ashby passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.
His life will be cherished by his son: James "Joey" Ashby of Madison; his step-daughter, Kimberly "Jo" Bott; his grandchildren: AtreyU Brandon Ashby and Tjon Miguel Ashby; his brothers: Benjamin Ashby and his companion, Barb of Hanover, Indiana, and Richard Ashby of Jasper, Indiana; and his sister: Betty Walters of Madison. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan who passed away on July 4, 1997, and several brothers and sisters.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison. The honor guard of the United States Army and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion will conduct graveside services at 1:15 PM at the Fairmount Cemetery in Madison, with interment to follow.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the James Ashby Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
