James Michael "Jim" Buchanan, age 83, of Bedford, Kentucky, and the son of the late Raymond A. and Helen P. (Hirst) Buchanan, was born on February 20, 1940, in Madison, Indiana. He was a 1958 graduate of Shawe Memorial High School. He was a proud member of the United States Army and served two tours in Vietnam. On April 10, 1970, he was united in marriage to Berdina Yvonne McGuire in Jeffersonville, Indiana and they were blessed with 53 years together. He worked at Reliance Electric for a short time and then worked at M & T Chemical Company (now known as Atofina Chemicals Inc.) in Carrollton until his retirement in 1994. He attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Carrollton, and was a 42-year member of the American Legion Post #41, Carrollton. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing with his wife, and watching the Madison Regatta from both sides of the river. Mr. Buchanan passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
His life will be cherished by his daughter: Kena Buchanan, of Carrollton, Kentucky; his grandchildren: Jordan Buchanan of Louisville, Kentucky and Kendrick Buchanan of Carrollton; his daughter-in-law: Crystal Buchanan of Bedford; his sister: Mary Davidson, and her companion, Harold O'Connor of Madison, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Berdina Buchanan who passed away on October 30, 2023; his son: Kelly Buchanan who passed away on February 19, 2014; and his brothers: Charles Cooper Buchanan, Paul Raymond Buchanan, and David Nathan Buchanan.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison with interment to follow. The Honor Guard of the American Legion, Post #41 of Carrollton will provide military honors at the cemetery.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the James Buchanan Memorial Fund to help with funeral expenses. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
