Jean Humphrey Obituary

Life story Jean (Sailor) Humphrey, age 88, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. Born March 4, 1930 in Madison, she was the daughter of Lester E. and Ethel (Eaglin) Sailor. Mrs. Humphrey graduated from Madison High School in 1963, earning her diploma after returning to school. She left school earlier to be married. On June 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert S. Humphrey in Madison. She was the bookkeeper for the former Auto Electric Service from 1970 until its closing in 2013, serving with both her late husband and son. Mrs. Humphrey was a member of First Baptist Church, the Bethany Circle of the International Order of the King's Daughters' and Sons and served as vice president of the King's Daughters' Hospital Board of Directors, She was an avid University of Kentucky Basketball fan and wrote many letters of congratulations to the team. In turn, she received many Christmas and birthday cards from the team, of which she was very proud. She enjoyed her family, and bowling, having bowled on several leagues, and earning the city championship in singles and doubles. She enjoyed writing poetry and began writing while taking care of her late husband during his illness, She will be sadly missed by one son and daughter-in-law: Richard A. "Rick" and Gracie Humphrey of Madison; three sisters: Jessie Stewart of Madison, Ann Leland of Hanover, Indiana, and Edith Light of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandchildren: Gayla Turner and her husband, Jake of Helena, Alabama, and Amanda Colbert and her husband, Paul of Saint Louis, Missouri; four great grandchildren: McGuire Turner, Morgan Turner, Porter Colbert and Grady Colbert; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 11, 1984, her parents; one son, Robert Stewart Humphrey in 1949, and one sister, Mary Ramsey. Mr. Rick Humphrey and Reverend Randy Crutchfield will conduct graveside services at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Hebron Cemetery, with interment to follow. There will be no visitation, as per her wishes. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Contributions may be made at any of the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service locations.
