Jewell Long Obituary

Jewell Dee "Skeeter" Long, age 87, of Milton, Kentucky, and the son of the late Vannie and Myrtle (Egerton) Long, was born on October 2, 1934, in Carroll County, Kentucky. During high school, he discovered his love for basketball and was a standout player for many years for the Milton High School Panthers. At the age of seventeen, he began working at Samples Ice Cream in downtown Madison where he began courting the love of his life, Georgia. After his graduation from Milton High School in 1953, he was united in marriage to the former Georgia Ann Gross at the home of Reverend Vincent in Madison on June 21, 1953. This wonderful union of sixty-nine years was blessed with four children: Julie, Kim, Ginger, and Randy.

He began his career at Charlestown Powder Plant but went on to work at Thompson Dairy Company where he enjoyed delivering milk to several grocery stores in East Enterprise and Fairview areas. For seventeen years, he ran the Milton Standard and Chevron service station. For the last forty years, he has devoted his life to farming, raising all kinds of produce, tobacco, and cattle.

When he was not working on the farm, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play basketball, watching the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville basketball and football teams compete, having breakfast regularly with his former basketball teammates at Frisch's, and was a proud long-time supporter of Trimble County High School basketball. He never met a stranger, was of the Christian faith, and his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the joy of his life. Mr. Long passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at the Norton King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison.

His life will be cherished by his wife, Georgia of Milton; his children: Julie Hall and her husband, Bob of Lamb, Indiana, Kim Long, of Milton, Ginger Long, of Hanover, Indiana, and Randy Long and his wife, Karen of Milton; his grandchildren: Michelle, Sara-Kate, Evan, and Ryan; his great grandchildren: Kailey, Elyza, Sydney, Alex, Andrew, and Serenity; his sister-in-law: Elaine Long of Milton; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Melissa Hall Mahatha; brothers: James "JC" Courtland Long, Howard Long, and Dennis "Denny" Long; his sister: Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Long Johnson; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. George Gross.
