John Rhodes Obituary

John Martin Rhodes, age 77, of Hanover, Indiana, entered this world on April 9, 1945 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He was the loving son of Byron and Mary (Murphy) Rhodes. He attended St. Bernard Grade School and was a member of the first graduating class of Bradford Central Christian High School. He then attended St. Bonaventure University and graduated from the Ranger School at Wanakena, New York. He married Janet Rae Hutcheson of Salamanca, New York on November 30 1968. They were blessed with a son, Chan, and a daughter Laura and three grandchildren: John and Ella Rhodes of Wamego, Kansas and Joshua Shoup of West Point, Virginia.

He was an outdoorsman, skier and Eagle Scout. He was a member of the Bradford Ski Club and an office holder in that organization. He also assisted in the operation of the Bradford (Zippo) Ski Slope. As a youngster he worked at the Bradford and Olean A&P stores. His first job, after college, was as an Engineering Technician on the Kinzua, Pennsylvania Pump Storage Project. He then was assigned to several power plant projects on the Wabash and Ohio Rivers. Thereafter he was involved with military facility, prison and school projects. He progressed "through the ranks" to become Operations Manager and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mid-east and Northern Europe. He thoroughly enjoyed this "line of work."

During the child raising years the Rhodes lived near Hanover, Indiana and were active in 4-H. His son, Chan, graduated from Southwestern High School, Hanover College and Purdue University. He is employed as a Construction Manager. His daughter, Laura graduated from Oldenburg, Indiana Academy, the State University of New York at Potsdam, New York and Averette University. She is employed as a school teacher. The Rhodes lived in several interesting places including Los Angeles, California, Lake Placid, New York and Wanakena, New York. The Rhodes built a home in Wanakena, New York and resided there for 15 years before moving back to the Madison/Hanover, Indiana area in 2016. They consider themselves to be Mid-Westerners at heart.

John is survived by Janet, his wife of 50 years, his son Chan, daughter-in-law Jennifer and their two children. Also surviving is his daughter Laura Shoup, son-in law Will and their son. His surviving sister Susan Webster and her husband Jim reside in Sewell, New Jersey.
