Lavelle Montez Smith, age 88, of Holton, Indiana, and the son of the late Eddie and Jessie (Morton) Smith, was born on December 16, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in sociology in Santa Barbara, California. In May of 1967, he was united in marriage to Cleta Mae Walls in Jeffersonville, Indiana. For eight years, he served as a tour guide at the Eleutherian College near Madison, until he retired in 2011. He had previously worked in nursing, including at several nursing homes. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing basketball, rollerskating, pistol target shooting, and playing music on the guitar, keyboard, harmonicas, spoons and drums. He also like to play cards and dominoes. Mr. Smith passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Norton King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, Indiana.
His life will be cherished by his wife of 56 years, Cleta of Holton; his son: Lavelle Smith, Jr., of Louisville, Kentucky; his sisters: Rose Williams and Patricia Smith, both of Louisville; his step-daughter: Lola Lowry of Louisville; his step-son: Danny Harris; and his great-grandchild: Loren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Rusty, Cecil, Buddy, and George Smith and sister, Omi Rice.
Pastor Paul Henderson will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday, October 27, 2023 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's hilltop. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Friday.
