Life story View WebTribute Mildred Clay Thorp Draper, 81, of Hanover, Indiana passed away at 9:47 P.M., on Monday, May 31, 2004 at the King's Daughters' Hospital. Born March 3, 1923 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, she was the daughter of William L. (Tap) and Sadie (Holden) Thorp, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Draper was also preceded in death by her husband, William Livingston Draper, in 1963; four brothers, William L. Thorp, Jr., John H. Thorp, Lawrence H. Thorp, and Herbert H. Thorp. Mrs. Draper was a graduate of Women's College, Greensboro (now UNCG,) earning a BA in English Education and from USIU, San Diego, California where she received a Master's Degree in Family Counseling. She worked as a teacher in Rocky Mount, NC, and later as Director of Religious Education for the Church of the Good Shepherd, also in Rocky Mount. After the death of her husband in 1963, she became House Mother and Dean of Students at Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, Glen Cove, NY and then moved to San Diego to pursue her Master's Degree. While studying there, she worked for Scripps Oceanographic Institute. After receiving her MA, she worked for the US Navy in San Diego, counseling in areas of substance abuse for sailors and their families. She then went on to use her skills as a marriage and family counselor both in San Diego and later in her hometown of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. After retiring from her counseling profession, she moved to Indiana in 1999 to be nearer to her son. In spite of poor health, she continued to take an active part in the life of Christ Episcopal Church where she was known for her wit, her singing and her strong faith. SURVIVORS Mrs. Draper is survived by her son, Rev. Richard T. Draper, and his wife Rev. Sherry Mattson of Madison; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Draper Calder, Jonathan K. Draper, and Tabitha Mattson-Draper. SERVICES The Right Reverend Catherine Waynick conducted Memorial Services at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 3, 2004 at the Christ Episcopal Church, 506 Mulberry Street, Madison, Indiana. Burial will take place in North Carolina at a later date. EXPRESSIONS Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Ulster Project of Madison, P.O. Box 1, Madison, Indiana 47250.
