Ralph Higgins Obituary

Mr. Ralph L. Higgins, age 92, of Madison, Indiana, and the son of the late Lawrence and Edith Faye (Sailor) Higgins, was born September 22, 1930, in Switzerland County, Indiana. He was raised in Switzerland County, and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1951 until he was honorably discharged in November of 1953. On November 20, 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Beverly L. Morris, and they were blessed with four children. He worked at Grote Manufacturing for thirty-one years, and also owned Ralph's Bait Shop.

In his younger years, he loved arrowhead hunting and boating. More recently, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, carpentry, and especially metal detecting. Mr. Higgins passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at River Terrace Health Campus in Madison with his family by his side.

His life will be cherished by his children: Kenny Higgins and his wife, Brenda of Madison, Debbie Leathermon and her husband, Keith of Madison, Chris Higgins and his wife, Anne of Madison, and Tracie Higgins of Madison; his sisters: Rosemary Sullivan and her husband, Bill of Madison and Caroline Tevis of Hanover; his sister-in-law: Donna Higgins of Fortville, Indiana; his brother-in-law: Randy Thornton of Columbus, Indiana; his stepfather-in-law: Larry Courtney and his wife, Leona of Carrollton, Kentucky; his grandchildren: Jennifer Hall and her husband, Dave, Josh Higgins and his wife, April, Bethany Geyman and her husband, Ryan, Luke Higgins, and Claire Higgins; his great-grandchildren: Courtnee, Olivia, Jackson, Dylan, Landon, Kaedon, Jaxson, Hunter, Gavin, Kole, and Maylee; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Rosie, and his cat, Kit Kat. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Higgins who passed away on January 14, 2018; his brothers: Herman Higgins, Lawrence Higgins, and Charles Higgins; and his sister: Eve Joan Higgins Baxter.

Pastor Bob Hicks will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Monday, February 27, 2023 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel on Madison's hilltop with interment to follow in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Friends and family may call at Lytle Welty Funeral Home & Cremation Service from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, February 26, 2023, and from 10:00 AM until the time of the service on Monday.

The Honor Guards of the United States Army and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion will conduct military honors.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
