Virginia Welch Obituary

Virginia Lou Welch, age 98, of Madison, Indiana, and the daughter of the late Collin Alvin and Elba Frances (Thompson) Ball, was born on December 24, 1922, in Carroll County, Kentucky. She attended Trimble County High School and was a homemaker throughout her life. On May 26, 1939, she was united in marriage to James Lawrence Welch and this union was blessed with five children: Gary, Mike, Damon, Franny, and Arthur. She was a devoted Christian wife, mother, and mama, as she loved caring for her family more than anything. She was a member of North Madison Christian Church and had also attended Wirt Baptist Church more recently. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading particularly Westerns, shopping and eating out, and tending to her flowers, especially her "swinging baskets." She found great joy in always being well-dressed and proper. Mrs. Welch passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.

Her life will be cherished by her daughter, Frances "Franny" Phillips and her husband, Gary, of Dupont, Indiana; her sister: Patsy Abbott, of Bedford, Kentucky; her daughters-in-law: Ruth Ann Welch of Corydon, Indiana, Wanda Welch of Madison, and Ginny Welch-Callis of Madison; her sisters-in-law: Ruth Welch of Lakeland, Florida, Sue Ball of Madison, and Sondra Ayler and her husband, Fred of Madison; her grandchildren: Kevin (Cindy), Linda (Mark), Joe (Devonda), Susie (Adam), Angela, Shawn (Leslie), Kelly (John), Kerry (Chris), Dana, Susan (Barry), Mike (Dawn), Bobby (Kathy), Shane (Toni), Gaeli (Andy), Kirsty (Kyle), and Collin (Nicole); 45 great grandchildren; 25 great great grandchildren and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty years, James Lawrence Welch who passed away March 11, 1999; her sons: Arthur Kevin Welch who passed away September 5, 1960, Damon Lee Welch who passed away September 25, 2019, James Michael "Mike" Welch who passed away January 31, 2021, and Gary Ball Welch who passed away February 1, 2021; her sister: Mary Jo Colbert who passed away May 13, 2017; her brother: H.J. Ball who passed away September 7, 2004; her grandchildren: Damon Eric Schoolcraft who passed away December 25, 1968 and Dawnna Schoolcraft Bowen who passed away January 20, 1996; and her great grandson: Jon Michael Schoolcraft, III who passed away January 18, 2008 in Iraq.

Reverend Troy Hedges will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Thursday December 16, 2021 at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison's hilltop with interment to follow in Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Kentucky. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, December 15, 2021, and from 10:00 AM until the time of the service on Thursday.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to The Mayor Damon Welch Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
