Wauneta DeVeary Obituary

Wauneta P. (Barnes) DeVeary, age 100, of Madison, Indiana, and the daughter of the late Jasper William and Lola B. (Scott) Barnes, was born on November 21, 1924, in Trimble County, Kentucky. She attended Canaan Elementary School and later went to North Madison High School. During high school, she worked at King's Daughters' Hospital in the kitchen and in housekeeping. On November 5, 1942, she was united in marriage to Emmett C. DeVeary in downtown Madison, and this union of 47 years was blessed with two daughters: Phyllis Jo and Donna. Wauneta was a seamstress at Meyers & Son Manufacturing Company in Madison, and later worked at Reliance Electric where she retired from after many years.

Wauneta loved flowers, crocheting, reading, traveling with her family and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Madison. Throughout the years, she enjoyed attending all of her grandchildren's activities and spending time with her circle of friends whom she worked and often socialized with. Wauneta was a very kind lady who adored her family and was always so accepting of others. Mrs. DeVeary passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison.

Her life will be cherished by her daughters: Phyllis Jo DeVeary Steinhardt, of Madison and Donna DeVeary Wehner and her husband, Randy of Madison; her grandchildren: Norbert Anthony "Tony" Steinhardt, III and his wife, Hilary of Madison, Scott Andrew Steinhardt and his wife, Karen of Easton, Maryland, and Angie Guarino Hertz and her husband, David of Madison; her great grandchildren: Dr. Sydney Steinhardt, Norbert "Anthony" Steinhardt, IV, Scott "Andrew" Steinhardt, Jr., William D. Steinhardt, Katie Hertz, and Jacob Hertz; her nephew, Jerry Barnes; her niece, Karen Shuler; and many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett C. DeVeary who passed away on July 28, 1990; her son-in-law, Norbert Anthony "Tony" Steinhardt, Jr. who passed away on January 1, 2025; her sister: Mary Parker; and her brothers: William Lamar Barnes, Harwood Barnes, and William Jasper Barnes.

Reverend Frank McGee will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Thursday, August 7, 2025 at Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison, with interment to follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Friends and family may visit at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Thursday.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army of Madison and the Women's Giving Circle of Jefferson County. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
