Mary Alene Shaw, age 87, of Madison, Indiana, and the daughter of the late Kenneth, Sr. and Edna G. (Moore) Chatham, was born on April 5, 1933, in Hanover, Indiana. She was married to John Ralston in 1951 and they had four children, Pam, Patty, Debbie and Tim. On April 3, 1973, she was united in marriage to James R. "Jim Bob" Shaw in New Albany, Indiana, and they enjoyed thirty-three wonderful years together. For many years, she was a clerk for the Indiana Department of Transportation, Madison office until her retirement. For over thirty-three years, she was a member of the Caledonia Presbyterian Church where she taught vacation Bible school and directed many children's Christmas plays. More recently, she became an active member at North Madison Baptist Church. In her younger years, she enjoyed taking care of the animals on the farm and attending horse pulls. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling, family gatherings, flower gardening, being involved with the Brooksburg Friendly Circle, volunteering at the Madison Historical Society, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mrs. Shaw passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.
Her life will be cherished by her children: Patricia "Patty" Guthrie, Debra "Debbie" Garrett and her husband, Alan, and John "Tim" Ralston, all of Madison; her step-children: Terry Shaw and his wife, Bonnie of Madison, Ryan Shaw of Vevay, Indiana, and Sandra "Sandy" Sutter of Madison; her sister: Kathleen "Kathy" Chatham Roberts, of Frankfort, Kentucky; her brother, Jon "Ted" Chatham of Lexington, Indiana; her grandchildren: Jeff Abbott, Jennifer Brindley, Allison Carrico, Jillian Chest, Anna Guthrie, Jessica Coughlin, Tamara Piper, Adrienne Shaw, Codi Sutter, Chris Shaw, and Ashley Shaw; several great grandchildren; her companion, Estie Vernon of Hanover, Indiana, a niece she raised, Valerie and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Shaw on March 14, 2006; her daughter, Pamela Sue Brindley Raley on June 17, 2008; her sons-in-law, Michael Brindley on January 16, 1998 and Kenny Guthrie on July 27, 2019; her brother: Kenneth D. "Sonny" Chatham, Jr. on April 27, 2018; and her sister-in-law, Lynda Chatham on October 24, 2019.
Reverend Frank McGee will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at North Madison Baptist Church, 1906 Orchard Street, Hilltop Madison with interment to follow in Caledonia Cemetery. Friends and family may call at North Madison Baptist Church from 11:00 AM until the time of service on Wednesday.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Caledonia Cemetery Association or the North Madison Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes or below.
